ADJ’s Wireless Up-lighting Used To Transform Californian Winery For Elegant Wedding Celebration

Located in Southern California’s picturesque Temecula Valley, the family-owned Monte Del Oro Winery isn’t just popular for the delicious wine it produces but as a beautiful venue for social events. Carl Grant, of Carl One Productions, often finds himself working at the winery, most recently for an elegant wedding where he used ADJ lighting to enhance the location’s natural ambiance.

Offering a variety of different areas to entertain guests, the Monte Del Oro Winery is a flexible location for events. Its name is Spanish for ‘mountain of gold’ and it commands panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and distant hills, both from its grand main tasting room and its lush terraced lawns. It was here that the wedding ceremony took place, during a gloriously sunny afternoon, which means that no lighting was required. However, afterwards, the approximately 150 guests headed inside the winery to its underground barrel room.

This unique space, surrounded by oaken barrels filled with aging wine, was used for the cocktail hour. Guests chatted and mingled, while enjoying cool drinks, and savoring the atmosphere of this unique venue. To enhance that atmosphere, Carl used eight of ADJ’s innovative WiFLY Dotz Par fixtures to fill the room with a rich blue glow. Each powered by a single 36W tri-color COB LED, these compact and easily portable up-lighting fixtures feature extended range wireless DMX as well as integral battery packs to allow cable free up-lighting.

Carl positioned his fixtures below stacks of barrels, which proved extremely effective. “They made the whole room pop,” he told us. “I got a lot of compliments from the guests on how the room looked. Using these battery-operated and wireless fixtures means no ugly duct-taped DMX or power cables. You can just place them on the floor exactly where you want them – and that’s it – you’re ready to go. The battery life on these things is great; I charge them the night before and I’ve never had a situation where the lights didn’t last to the end of the event. If you’re working typical 5 - 6 hour parties, these fixtures will more than adequately last.”

Following the drinks reception, guests were invited to head upstairs to the Winery’s main tasting room. This grand space, with its Tuscan-inspired architecture and huge arched windows looking out over neighboring vineyards, is a stunning room for dining and dancing. Carl enhanced it further using sixteen ADJ WiFLY Par QA5 fixtures for up-lighting, highlighting the room’s impressive exposed-brick pillars.

Packing in 5 x 5-watt RGBA LEDs, the WiFLY Par QA5 creates a powerful wash of light with an extremely wide color palette. As with the WiFLY Dotz Par, this fixture has integrated wireless DMX connectivity and an internal rechargeable battery, allowing it to be used anywhere within a venue, completely unimpeded by cables. It also features a dual yoke – which can be used either as a floor stand or hanging bracket – as well as ADJ’s unique ‘sit flat’ design. This allows the unit to stand with its rear panel directly on the floor, for easy up-lighting, with its input and output connections (when cabled power and/or DMX is used) positioned at the sides.

“I particularly like the WiFLY Par QA5,” Carl explained, “because it has RGBA LEDs, so it has an Amber element. This is very cool, as it gives you the ability to create those unique colors that a lot of the brides are asking for these days. It also has a 25-degree beam angle, which is nice for most up-lighting situations. But, if I need a wider beam – to up-light a wall for example – I can use the gel frame to add in a diffusion filter to create a wider spread of light.”

For control, Carl used ADJ’s innovative WiFLY NE1, the intuitive wireless DMX controller that makes programming and operating a lightshow incredibly easy, even for those with no previous DMX experience. As the clients didn’t have a particular color scheme for the evening, he used it to set the WiFLY Par QA5s to wash the Monte Del Oro tasting room with a vibrant shade of deep blue which added an inviting glow to the luxurious setting.

However, it’s possible to create impressive up-lighting effects using ADJ’s wireless pars even without the use of a controller, as Carl explained, “The cool thing about these lights is that if you have situations like this, where the client doesn’t give you a specific color to match, they have built-in color macros. That means that you can very quickly scroll through and choose the one that looks best in a particular venue and it will then only take a couple of minutes to select the same macro on all the other fixtures around a room. But also, if you have a client who is a little bit more picky, and has a specific color they want you to match, you can custom-mix any color right from the display on the unit without the need for a separate controller.”

Pairing the modern technology of ADJ’s wireless up-lighting fixtures with the timeless elegance of the Monte Del Oro Winery, Carl was able to create a truly atmospheric setting for his clients’ wedding celebration. What’s more, their party wasn’t marred by unsightly power and DMX cables, and at the end of the night packing away was a breeze with no duct-tape to remove or cords to coil. The result? Happy clients and a happy DJ!
